The government is prepared to help with the restoration of historic buildings, including churches, that were harmed by the magnitude 7 earthquake that shook Northern Luzon last month.

Rene Escalante, the chairperson of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA), visited the earthquake-affected areas this week and said that some of the structures are in the provinces of Abra, Ilocos Sur, and Ilocos Norte.

The national government, according to him, will only focus on “large ticket rehabilitation activities.”

They are considering the Vigan Cathedral, the Bantay Church and its recognizable bell tower, and parish churches in the communities of San Esteban, Candon, and Santa Maria, among other buildings in Ilocos Sur.

According to a report on Friday by the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) news website, Escalante stated that “they will be submitted as the priority projects of the national government.”

Escalante added that the government is completing the list of structures it will rehabilitate.

He continued by saying that in addition to the financial relief the government will provide, they are looking to seek assistance from foreign organizations.

The structures are currently undergoing extensive engineering investigations to further evaluate the damages and determine the scope of rehabilitation required, according to the NCCA chief.

“We support your efforts to repair these historic buildings… Let’s rebuild more skillfully, Escalante remarked.
