‘Serial killer, kidnapped in white van’ claims are untrue, according to PNP

On Wednesday, the Philippine National Police (PNP) denied allegations that a serial killer and criminals traveling in a white van were responsible for a string of suspected killings and disappearances of many people.

“If we examine the circumstances surrounding the discovery of cadavers and the claimed kidnapping of individuals who were later discovered dead, we will learn that no serial killer is present in this case because multiple parties and objectives are at play. We also do not have any records of situations where a white van was used to kidnap persons, despite claims made on social media to the contrary “Col. Jean Fajardo, a PNP spokesperson, said in a televised interview.

However, Fajardo acknowledged the value of social media posts in educating the public about crimes and settling cases that the police are looking into.

Interior Secretary Benjamin Abalos Jr. stated in a Palace briefing that before making any comments on the matter, he must first obtain reliable statistics on crime incidences related to the alleged spate of homicides and kidnappings.

Abalos said that he has requested a report on the slew of alleged deaths that have alarmed the public, particularly as this year’s in-person lessons have begun, from PNP commander Gen. Rodolfo Azurin Jr.

“I spoke with PNP head Azurin since new statistics are being released. I’m only interested in the timeframe and the veracity of these events. I haven’t seen the reports yet. He told me that there are instances of previously reported occurrences, therefore even though there aren’t any statistics available, I won’t remark. Let’s hear from the PNP, Abalos remarked in a mix of English and Filipino, and that is what is crucial.

In the meantime, Abalos allayed worries by saying that, upon becoming DILG Secretary in July, his directive to the PNP will be to increase “police visibility” on the streets.

He acknowledged the importance of village employees in maintaining law and order in localities.

In order to discuss issues pertaining to public security, Abalos said he will meet with the barangay leaders at a convention later on Wednesday.
