In the 2023 budget, Solon requests greater spending for Mindanao.

On Friday, a legislator urged Congress to reinstate the PHP22 billion cut to Mindanao funding in the proposed PHP5.268 trillion national budget for 2023.

Cagayan de Oro City Representative Rufus Rodriguez stated during the briefing of the Development Budget Coordination Committee (DBCC) that a total of PHP628 billion had been earmarked for Mindanao next year from PHP650 billion this year.

He said that Mindanao should receive its fair share of national resources and that the federal government should boost rather than decrease its financing.

“Mindanao is abandoned once more! I’m requesting that all of our island’s House (of Representatives) members collaborate with us to secure the return of PHP22 billion to our residents. Maintaining the 2022 level is the least we can do, if we are unable to raise it, Rodriguez said.

He highlighted the 2020 census, which revealed that 26.3 million people lived on the island, or 24 percent of the 109.6 million people in the entire nation.

He continued by saying that Mindanao produces 17% of the country’s annual overall output of goods and services.

“Our island should be entitled to at least PHP895 billion if we base its budgetary portion on its economic contribution,” he remarked.

By “dispersing development and pouring more resources” in areas that are underdeveloped or undeveloped at all, according to Rodriguez, the executive and legislative branches should cooperate to foster inclusive growth.

He pointed out that Mindanao is home to seven of the country’s ten poorest provinces and that it has to be given special consideration through more funding and expanded rural government services.

He asserted that more economic activity would occur in isolated regions if the government constructed roads and other facilities there.
