Online systems have been utilized by 80% of Cordillera MSMEs: DTI.

In the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR), the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) revealed that more than 20,000 micro, small, and medium-sized businesses (MSMEs) have used online systems in their business practices and are accessible online.

According to Juliet Lucas, regional director of the DTI-CAR, a lot of capacity building has been done during the previous two years.

She explained, “It started with social media marketing, and now we are including logistics into how we digitalize cashless payments, utilizing QR (quick response) codes.”

Lucas claimed that with the aid of science and technology, digitalization had been incorporated into both marketing and the accounting inventory system.

According to her, working with the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) enables business owners to innovate more, increasing their output and marketability.

“While productivity needs to be increased in order for businesses to be more price competitive, the quality of their products is also excellent. If they are more productive, they can raise prices and increase product quality at the same time. (If they are more productive, they can become more price-competitive.) The quality can occasionally suffer from manual production, and it can take longer to complete a product,” Lucas said.

The government’s idea of digitalization encompasses all aspects of business, including marketing platforms, financial systems, and logistics for delivery and finance.

Lucas also emphasized the technology that is accessible through the other agencies and can be used to automate systems for quality uniformity in addition to attractiveness.

She mentioned that many small business owners have an online presence and sell their items on “Facebook” in regard to the digitalization of marketing activities.

While internet connectivity issues in the area continue to be a problem, according to Lucas, business owners have formed social media accounts where they post information about their products, contacts, addresses, and even promotions.

“They search for places with connectivity. Whether they are in populated regions or not, it gets pushed once it is published. If they have a connection, they can upload content or check their inbox for messages, allowing others to reach them via the mobile numbers they list on their profiles even if they are not online, the expert said.

According to the officials, the aim is to make it possible for clients to contact them virtually rather than in person.

Lucas says, “We want business owners to be searchable so that clients may examine them when they are looking for something.”

At least 17,000 MSMEs are present in Benguet and Baguio, according to lawyer Sam Gallardo, the provincial director of DTI-Benguet.

The figure is based on business licenses issued by the regional governments and trade name registrations.
