In response to the rising demand for public transportation, the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) has authorized the reopening of 43 pre-pandemic routes served by 3,513 buses, jeepneys, and UV Express units (UVEs).

According to Memorandum Circular No. 2022-073 issued by the LTFRB on Friday, the lines are a part of the Metro Manila Urban Transport Integration Study Update and Capacity Program (MUCEP).

Before this, 98 pre-pandemic routes were approved for resumption but were later determined to be “insufficient to cater to the existing and forecast passenger demand.”

Of the 43 new routes, 11 will be operated by classic public utility jeepneys (PUJ), five by contemporary PUJs, six by classic and contemporary UVEs, and 20 by public utility buses.

The LTFRB announced via Facebook that 1,675 PUBs had been permitted to run along 20 routes.

“The LTFRB is responding to the ongoing need for public transportation amid the pandemic and to support the livelihood of” PUV drivers, the post stated. “Ang pagbubukas ng mga naturang ruta ay pagtugon ng LTFRB sa pangangailangan ng pampublikong sasakyan sa gitna ng pandemya at pangkabuhayan ng mga.”

The LTFRB warned PUV owners and drivers starting their businesses again to abide by the rules outlined in their Certificates of Public Convenience or risk fines and other sanctions.
