“Unity, healing, and economic development are keys to peace,” says DBM’s chief

Amenah Pangandaman, secretary of the Department of Budget and Management (DBM), has stressed the significance of harmony and reconciliation in bringing about long-lasting peace and national success.

“We’ve always heard the phrase ‘unity in difference. And we are aware that this has been the situation in the Philippines,” Pangandaman said during the National Peace Consciousness Month’s closing event on Friday at the Philippine International Convention Center in Pasay City.

She concluded her statement by saying, “Let us all be united in seeking peace as we go forward with our agenda for prosperity for the area.

The Gawad Kapayapaan Peace Awards Project, which aims to honor the nation’s peace advocates and champions and present best practices in peace-building that can be replicated and sustained, was launched by the Office of the Presidential Adviser on Peace, Reconciliation, and Unity (OPAPRU) to conclude the 2022 National Peace Consciousness Month.

The subject of this year’s Peace Month, “Pagkakaisa at Paghilom: Isang Bansa para sa Kapayapaan,” is based on President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s call for national harmony and serves as a reminder to Filipinos that only through cooperation and togetherness can the country achieve true and permanent peace.

Pangandaman, a Muslim with origins in Marawi City, claimed that the creation of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM), with its measures for “enduring peace and sustainable socio-economic development,” is a “historic win for the entire country.”

She asserted that the country’s “bright future” would result from closer collaboration between the federal administration and the Bangsamoro government.

The rest of the Philippines and the BARMM, according to Pangandaman, “can grow together, as two governments work in support of each other towards a single goal — to offer better living conditions for every Filipino.”

“In light of this, I am happy to say that at this point in our history, we can proudly say that we have achieved peace, and we are determined to help in the realization of our call for peace, reconciliation, and unity to achieve a just and lasting peace for the nation and for all Filipinos,” the speaker said.

She asserted that the government’s calls for peace, amity, and unity are essential for the nation to advance and prosper.

Additionally, Pangandaman promised to assist BARMM in promoting growth and make Mindanao “(shine) as the land of promise.”

“Over the years, we have witnessed the germination of many of Mindanao’s potential seeds for success, especially in agriculture and tourism. However, we have yet to see the results,” she added.

“The promise of fruitfulness has been hidden for many years by strife. But now that we have peace, we will undoubtedly see one fruit after another, and all of our people will benefit from it,” she continued.

The Normalization Program in the Bangsamoro region will receive around PHP852.9 million under the proposed national budget for 2023, while PHP36.1 million will be allocated to help former Moro National Liberation Front fighters with their socioeconomic development (MNLF).

Pangandaman pointed out that the projected monies are in addition to the PHP74.4 billion budgeted for BARMM.

“Seeing Mindanao prosper is a particular goal of mine as a daughter from there. We envision wealth for the Philippines and Mindanao, the woman continued. To ensure that no one is left behind, “I will make sure that these funds would be dispersed fairly throughout the Philippines.”
