With the help of surfing events, Siargao tourism is beginning to rebound.
On Saturday, local surfers dominated the first Mayor Sol’s National Surfing Competition at Cloud 9 in Siargao Island in Surigao del Norte by taking advantage of their familiarity with the waves.
The first national competition was held in Siargao following the devastation caused by Typhoon Odette in December of last year and the declaration of the Covid-19 pandemic in March 2020.
There were 121 male and 19 female surfers from the Philippines competing overall.
Robert Timbal of Catanduanes, Jayward Alceso, and Benjomar Canon, two more competitors from the same province, finished third and fourth, respectively. At the same time, Noah Arkfeld took the first position in the Men’s Open Short Board division.
Timbal only scored 3.20 points in the finals, while Arkfeld earned 11.75.
In an all-Siargo podium finish, Nilbie Blancada triumphed in the women’s division ahead of Diane Nogalo and Susan Escanilla.
Each winner earned PHP80,000 in cash, followed by PHP50,000 for second place and PHP25,000 for third.
The mayor of Gen. Luna Town, Sol Matugas, expressed gratitude to everyone who “went above and beyond to contribute their time, resources, and abilities.”
In a speech, Matugas remarked, “I’m delighted that we have revived our family spirit under this surfing event.
The United Philippine Surfing Association sanctioned the competition, which served as a qualifier for the 26th Siargao International Surfing Cup, which will take place from October 15 to 21.
The island will see an increase in visitors due to the international competition, according to Matugas, who also claimed that they are prepared to host.
44,482 arrivals were recorded in the town from April through August of this year, according to data from the Gen. Luna tourism office.
Siargao saw a decrease in tourists from 257,900 in 2019 to 67,717 in 2020.
No local or foreign arrivals were recorded in April, May, and October 2020.
The number fell even more in 2021 to 28,287, including 737 foreign visitors.
