By recovering the export market, particularly for engineered bamboo, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) in Western Visayas (Region 6) hopes to enhance sales of its bamboo goods.

“If we can resurrect the export market because we used to export previously. Before I believe in the late 1980s to the 1990s, Iloilo exported bamboo. Therefore, we would like to reach a point where bamboo goods may more or less be included in the global value chain, said regional director for DTI Ermelinda Pollentes in an interview on Wednesday.

According to the achievement report on the execution of the 2020 Bamboo Cluster Plan, the domestic sales of bamboo goods in Western Visayas reached PHP7.123 million as of September 30, 2022, an increase of 88 percent from PHP6.10 million.

To develop a pertinent, current, calibrated, and inclusive plan to further develop the bamboo industry in the region, the Western Visayas Bamboo Industry Development Council, presided over by the DTI, is conducting a Regional Bamboo Industry Assessment and Strategic Planning in a hotel in Iloilo City until Wednesday.

“The DTI function mostly relates to marketing. Given that this is a clustering method, we must consider the cluster from a plantation perspective, from the nursery to the development, to ensure the supply production,” she continued.

“E (engineered)-bamboo utilizes four common service facilities. Since there is a market for raw materials, we wish to take advantage of this opportunity. Therefore, she said that everyone is pleased because they receive a fair portion of their investments in the bamboo industry.

According to Pollentes, DTI wants the entire region to be known as the nation’s capital of bamboo.

Around 24,535.85 hectares of bamboo have been planted in Western Visayas since September 2022.
