Aquilino Pimentel III, the leader of the Senate minority, declared on Tuesday that he would help the majority in promoting policies or budgets that will increase the nation’s food output.

The PHP163.8 billion budget for the Department of Agriculture (DA), which President Ferdinand R. Marcos now runs, includes PHP30 billion for the National Irrigation Administration’s proposed expenditures.

Pimentel asserted that lawmakers must give full support to policies that aim to increase food production.

“Food production must be the priority of the government, the administration, and Congress, and they must provide all necessary assistance. “If it is only about food production, we will come together on that,” he declared.

According to Pimentel, the proposed rise in the DA budget for 2023 is anticipated, given Marcos’ emphasis on agriculture.

He told Senate reporters, “If it’s spent on the productivity of the land to create food, agree tayo diyan (we agree to it).”

Pimentel also wants to know the DA officials’ suggestions for enhancing the agricultural sector and preventing importation.

“Eh, that is the baguhin’s greatest desire” (That is what we want to change). We are making sure that either the existing or new staff at the DA changes its belief that importation is the best way to address shortages, at least in this Senate, he said.
