1,029 families impacted by the severe downpour brought on by the shear line in Zamboanga del Norte have received aid totaling more than PHP500,000 from the Department of Social Welfare and Development’s regional office in Zamboanga Peninsula (DSWD-9).

When warm and cold winds collide in the atmosphere, it creates a shear line, which leads to the formation of rain clouds.

Family food packs (FFPs) were given to each of the impacted families, totaling 1,029 FFPs costing PHP562,338, according to Ivan Eric Salvador, DSWD-9’s information officer.

According to Salvador, the three towns’ municipal offices for disaster risk reduction and management and for social welfare and development worked together to coordinate Monday’s distribution.

The local government units (LGUs) were used to identify the FFP recipients, but Salvador added that profiling was still being used to identify everyone affected by the weather disturbance.

The Roxas municipal government was also given modular tents from DSWD-9 for the benefit of the affected families who are now staying in the evacuation center, he continued.

PAGASA noted that the shear line will deliver moderate to heavy rainfall, with at times strong rains, over Eastern Visayas in the upcoming 24 hours in its weather advisory No. 8.

Palawan, Bohol, the Zamboanga Peninsula, Northern Mindanao, and Caraga are all likely to have moderate to occasionally severe rains.

According to PAGASA, flooding and rain-induced landslides are expected, particularly in regions with large antecedent rainfall and regions that are extremely or very highly sensitive to these hazards as identified in hazard maps.

PAGASA encouraged officials in charge of disaster risk reduction and management to take all necessary precautions to safeguard people and property.
