Instead of imposing a deployment prohibition, strengthen the labor agreement: Ople
Following calls for a suspension of deployment to Kuwait following the death of Jullebee Ranara, Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) Secretary Susan Ople expressed on Thursday her opinion that, rather than imposing a deployment ban, labor migration issues and concerns in Kuwait could be settled through a cordial dialogue.
“We recognize the sincere motives driving the requests for a deployment embargo to Kuwait. However, I have always thought that social conversation is the crucial first step in addressing labor migration worries, Ople said in a statement.
“However, that does not imply that we disregard such calls. It just means that, for the time being, we want to use labor diplomacy to increase security and make sure Jullebee and her family receive justice, she continued.
The Kuwaiti police discovered Ranara’s burned body and fractured head on January 22 in Salmi, Al-Jarah Governorate.
Ople confirmed that the 17-year-old son of Ranara’s employer, who confessed to the crime, was apprehended by Kuwaiti authorities in less than 24 hours. The suspect is currently being held by police.
The overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) in distress who have been residing at the government-run Bahay Kalinga shelter have been given full aid by the Kuwaiti government, she added.
The existing Bilateral Labor Agreement (BLA) might be reviewed instead of implementing a deployment ban to further strengthen the working, fruitful partnership between Kuwait and the Philippines, according to Ople.
“A new BLA would offer our OFWs more security. With the assistance of the government of Kuwait, we can do more to safeguard our employees, she continued.
While a law company hired by the Philippine Embassy in Kuwait is handling the case and will continue to work with the Kuwaiti authorities to bring justice to the dead OFW and her family, Ranara’s remains are anticipated to arrive in the nation on Friday night.
