Benguet town advocates for the registration of vegetable vendors
To stop “bogus” buyers from taking advantage of defenseless farmers, the municipal government of La Trinidad, Benguet, is establishing rules for its proposal to demand the registration of vegetable traders and disposers.
“We want to make sure that they register and post bonds so that our farmers have something to hold them accountable if they are not paid for their produce as agreed. Romeo Salda, the mayor, stated in a phone interview on Thursday that we must have a framework in place to protect our farmers.
According to Salda, there have been allegations of farmers not getting paid for their food once purchasers get access to it.
According to him, “bogus” customers multiplied, particularly during the pandemic, increasing the losses suffered by farmers.
The mayor remarked in Ilocano, “They have been coming to us for help, but our hands are tied, especially with transactions that were only verbal and through SMS.”
He continued by saying that informal receipts, typically consisting of a little piece of paper and lacking even the name of the fruit buyer, are typically used in transactions.
Salda claimed that so far this year, they haven’t heard from the farmers with any significant complaints.
“We have made sure that the commodity prices are reasonable. That indicates that our farmers are profiting and are content with the state of the market, he said. “I would expect to see them come over to protest and seek steps regarding importation and smuggling if they are losing as a result of the drastically decreased prices of the commodities. We are pleased that they are doing well despite the fact that we haven’t heard from them recently.
Several trading facilities, including those in Mountain Province and Ifugao, are located in La Trinidad where produce from various towns in Benguet is delivered for commerce.
Truckers load tons of locally grown produce here for delivery to Metro Manila and as far as the Visayas.
