After a huge fire destroyed it last Sunday, the Department of Tourism (DOT) is prepared to help with the rebuilding of the Manila Central Post Office.

Tourism Secretary Christina Frasco stated that the DOT views the historic building as a “cultural treasure” and merits support throughout the country.

She said in a media forum on Wednesday, “We note the remarks that have been made by the city government of Manila that have assured that it will not be torn down and from our end in the DOT, acknowledging the heritage value of this structure, we are prepared to follow through on the direction that the Marcos administration would take in terms of how to rehabilitate the structure.

Particularly because our affiliated organization, TIEZA (Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority), has long taken the lead in supporting the renovation of historic sites, she continued.

The post office is located in Liwasang Bonifacio. Manila Mayor Honey Lacuna had allayed concerns that a new building would go up by stating that local and governmental declarations protect the facility.

The fire broke out at the Manila Central Post Office building’s General Services Department at 11:41 p.m. on Sunday and raged for more than 30 hours before it was put out at 6:33 a.m. on Tuesday.

The Juan Arellano-designed national historical site was constructed in 1926 and is now protected by the Heritage Law.

In 1945, World War II again caused damage to it, and the next year it was repaired.

The National Historical Commission of the Philippines reaffirmed its commitment to rehabilitating the neoclassical edifice. Still, it stated that it will make way for the Philippine Postal Corporation (PHLPost) to undertake recovery operations and attend to the basic needs of its people.
