Pangasinan town’s Sigay Festival honors the riches of the sea.
The Sigay Festival in this town, held on Friday to celebrate the wealth of the sea and promote local businesses and tourists, was made even more enjoyable by the sunset, sea wind, and sound of waves.
When the town holds the Kalutan ed Baybay (grilling by the sea), which is a part of the Binmaley Sigay Festival and town fiesta, partygoers grill bangus (milkfish), hito (catfish), and tilapia, the street party, which is typically hosted in the Poblacion area, was transferred to the Binmaley Baywalk.
The idea behind the Kalutan ed Baybay was to support the promotion of the eateries and bars along the bay walk.
An estimated 320 grills were placed along the Binmaley Baywalk in Barangay San Isidro Norte, extending toward Barangay Buenlag, according to Engr. Lex Fernandez, executive committee chairman.
The proprietors of the barbecues and the participants all have their designated grills, he said.
Each grill, according to Fernandez, costs PHP3,500. This price includes 1.5 liters of coke, 2 liters of alcohol, 1 kilo of bangus, 2 kg of hito, and 1 kilo of tilapia. It also includes a barbecue thong, a table, and 10 seats.
Three performance stages are present. Local restaurants sponsored two of the stages. As the main band, the Manila-based pop/rock group Orange and Lemons received a commission from the local government, he continued.
According to Fernandez, hito is Binmaley’s second-best-selling aqua product.
“Bangus remains number one, while tilapia is third. Hito culture is currently gaining popularity and is quickly becoming a backyard industry. It is profitable. Tanks may be used for culture, he suggested.
In addition to Binmaley, Hito businesses had also seized a sizable portion of the market (restaurants/eateries) in other towns.
Gerry Apolinario, the assistant municipal administrator, said Mayor Pedro Merrera III chose a straightforward entrance.
He explained that the Kalutan ed Baybay was a trial run for the street party since, when it first began several years ago, it was held in the Poblacion neighborhood.
Additionally dispatched were individuals from the Philippine Army, the Binmaley Police, and neighborhood civic groups.
The Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Center also had control over ambulances and fire engines.
