The Department of Agriculture (DA) on Friday guaranteed investments in the future agri-fishery generation as it supports the agribusiness operations of young Filipinos.

In a statement, the DA claimed that by helping nearly 3,000 youths, it has strengthened its efforts to further the administration’s plan for food security.

“At least 2,955 young Filipinos have benefited of the assistance and support for their agribusiness projects under the Department of Agriculture’s (DA) Young Farmers’ Challenge (YFC) in keeping with the Marcos administration’s food security goal,” it stated.

The DA, under the leadership of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., the concurrent agriculture chief, said the YFC comprises support through incentives for food production-related firms.

“During President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s administration, the government is relying on the creativity and originality of young Filipinos to assure food sustainability and to open up opportunities in agriculture throughout the nation.

Nevertheless, the help is not just financial; young farmers and company owners can also take advantage of access to business development services, credit, and loans.

The Agricultural Credit Policy Council’s (ACPC) Kapital Access for Young Agripreneurs (KAYA) and Agri-Negosyo Loan Programs (ANLP), which they can utilize to maintain current operations and increase production capacities, are also offered to them, the DA stated.

For instance, Eldrin Lee, a science major, Skyrene Bacalso, and his brother Edriel made the most of the YFC program to launch Nama Microgreens, an urban growing organization.

The Nama Microgreens were awarded grants totaling about PHP100,000 at the YFC province level and another PHP150,000 at the YFC regional level.

The “sustainable food system” that the urban gardening program created eventually grew to the point where they could open their Central Kitchen.

The DA said, “The young agri-preneurs also formed alliances with well-known chefs in the nation and are now delivering microgreens to a number of eateries and hotels, including Makati Diamond Hotel and the Sequoia Hotel in Quezon City.

The DA’s Agriculture and Marketing Assistance Service (DA-AMAS) launched the Young Farmers’ Coalition, with the Office of Senator Imee Marcos providing the majority of the venture financing.
