Rafael Lotilla of the Department of Energy (DOE) has asked Filipinos to use electricity wisely in order to assist assure the availability of enough power in advance of the dry season when rising temperatures will cause a rise in demand.

Ahead of the Makati Business Club event in Makati City on Monday, Lotilla warned reporters that yellow alerts are likely, particularly during the dry season, based on the available supply and the planned maintenance of various power-producing plants.

The first yellow warning is anticipated to occur in week 11 of March, which is this week on the Luzon grid, according to DOE’s power outlook for the year.

According to information provided by the National Grid Company of the Philippines (NGCP), on March 14 the Luzon grid would have an operational margin of 4,012 megawatts (MW), the Visayas grid will have 354 MW, and the Mindanao grid will have 801 MW.

According to Lotilla, this week’s power consumption has been moderated by the weather and temperature.

“March has already passed. The good news is that the temperature has also helped, and in April, we anticipate some weekly wet days, which will aid in temperature management, the speaker continued.

According to Lotilla, for every 1 degree Celsius rise in temperature, there is a corresponding increase in demand for power of about 100 MW.

According to the DOE prediction, yellow alerts—a thinning of the power supply but without cyclical brownouts—are also anticipated in the Luzon system in the months of April, May, June, September, October, and November.

The energy head said, “We would like to see everyone manage their usage.

Lotilla listed some methods for controlling energy demand, including not using electricity between the hours of 11 a.m. and noon, 2 p.m. and 3 p.m., and 7 p.m. and 8 p.m. for Manila Electric Company franchise areas, as well as setting the temperature of the air conditioning at 25 degrees Celsius in workplaces, hotels, and other establishments.
