A fish sanctuary in Barangay Lazareto in this province has been affected by the oil spill, which started in Naujan town.

Aquaculturist Marius Panahon claimed in an interview that the Calapan Fishery Management Office (FMO) on Thursday afternoon received multiple images demonstrating oil traces that had been observed at the Harka Piloto fish sanctuary.

The photographs, according to Panahon, were shot Thursday morning by members of the Bantay Dagat (Sea Patrol) who were keeping an eye on the sanctuary, which is located right next to Verde Island Passage, the site of the most important marine biodiversity center in the world.

The Harka Piloto Fish Sanctuary is actively being safeguarded by the local community and government as a marine protected area (MPA).

The city’s tourism agency claims that the area is encircled by crystalline blue waters that are filled with an abundance of marine life and are perfect for diving, snorkeling, or just lazily wading on the shores.

The tanker MT Princess Empress, which was traveling from Bataan province to Iloilo and was carrying 800,000 liters of industrial oil, sank on February 28 off the coast of Naujan town after its engine overheated.
