Delegates from Miss Universe Philippines visit Eastern Visayas

During their first two days in the area, Miss Universe Philippines (MUPH) candidates visited popular tourist attractions in this city and Samar.

On Monday, the 38 contenders came to the city and took part in a welcoming lunch that featured the best dishes and specialties from the surrounding area.

At the luncheon hosted by the Tingog Party list and House of Representatives Speaker Ferdinand Martin Romualdez at the Nipa Hut, Miss Agusan del Norte Jannarie Zarzoso said, “I am really honored and on behalf of all the ladies I would like to thank you for the preparation for allowing us (to) experience Leyte, its culture, food, dances, and music.”

Following lunch, their first significant event was a motorcade through the city during which supporters clapped for their preferred candidates.

Pauline Amelinckx (from Bohol), Michelle Dee (from Manila), and candidates from the Eastern Visayas Layla Adriatico (from Northern Samar), Airish Ramos (from Eastern Samar), and Kimberly Escartin (from Southern Leyte) were among the people’s choices.

The participants headed to the Tacloban port area following the procession to take part in the San Juanico sunset sail.

Along with them were representatives from the MUPH led by Jonas Gaffud and Karina Rosa Tiopes, director of the Department of Tourism 8 (Eastern Visayas).

After the yacht carrying the candidates passed beneath the San Juanico Bridge during the cruise, its decorative light was turned on.

After spending about 30 minutes admiring the lights, the women returned to the Tacloban port district and went to the Price Mansion for a meal with a barbecue theme.

One of the city’s historic buildings is the Price Mansion. being General Douglas McArthur’s official residence during World War II’s Liberation Era.

The Sohoton Caves and Natural Bridge, Panhulugan Cave and its remarkable rock formations, Saob Cave, and Saint Michael the Archangel Church were among the places candidates visited in Basey, Samar, on Tuesday.

In Marabut, Samar, they also stopped at the Caluwayan Palm Island Resort.

They will travel to Palompon, Leyte on May 3 to visit Kalanggaman Island.

The wide rice fields of Isidro village in Sta. Fe Leyte will serve as the location for the national costume shoot on May 4. The Leyte Normal University in this city will host the national costume competition at night.

On May 5, MUPH candidates will take part in a charity event at the local SOS Children’s Village, a cultural and historical tour of Tacloban City and the surrounding town of Palo, and a ceremony to lay floral tributes at the Yolanda Mass Grave in the city’s Holy Cross Memorial Garden.

According to Tiopes, hosting the national costume competition here will provide the area a chance to show off its offerings to tourists.

“More than 95% of the candidates, organizers, and technical crew for Miss Universe Philippines are first-timers in the country. Although some people can trace their ancestry to certain towns in the area, they never had the chance to visit,” she said.

“Our natural bounty, our culture and heritage, our artistry and abilities, our character and values are revealed in every place they visit, every dish and delicacy they taste, every craft they see, every local entertainment experience, and every Eastern Visayan they engage with,” said the president of the Eastern Visayas.

In the meantime, 1,973 police officers from the Philippine National Police (PNP) were stationed in the area to supervise crowd control, regulate traffic, safeguard the candidates’ final destinations, and ensure route safety.

38 close-in security personnel have also been deployed by the PNP, with one police officer being allocated to each contender.

Recently, these police officers took a refresher training in VIP security.

Up to May 6, the local police will maintain a state of high alert.

In order to prevent lawless individuals and any unpleasant incidents from disrupting the event, police officers will take comprehensive security measures in close conjunction with the relevant government agencies.

According to Police Regional Office (PRO) 8 Director Brig. Gen. Rommel Francisco Marbil, “Given the popularity of the pageant, we will further boost our tourism industry not only by the tourist attractions but also with the peace and order in the region.”

The Tingog Party list and Speaker Romualdez worked with the Miss Universe Philippines organization to bring the contest to Eastern Visayas.
