DFA believes that PH is moving past the pre-pandemic phase.

The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) wants to achieve middle power status in the coming decades rather than just return the Philippines to its pre-Covid-19 situation on a national level.

DFA Secretary Enrique Manalo stated in a statement honoring the 125th anniversary of the Philippine Independence Day on Monday that the subject “Kalayaan. Kinabukasan. Kasaysayan” (Independence. Future. History.)” meant not just influencing the nation’s past but also it’s future.

The Department of Foreign Affairs (“DFA”) “pays tribute to our rich and proud history by drawing wisdom from its lessons, guiding our steadfast commitment to an independent foreign policy that navigates the complexities of our time,” Manalo stated.

He said that the Philippines “stands on the cusp of attaining middle power status” and plans to have the 16th-largest economy in the world by 2040.

In order to achieve these goals and make sure that our people receive tangible advantages, he continued, “Our international engagements and partnerships play a vital role.”

He pointed out that the DFA was one of the first organizations set up after the nation gained independence 125 years ago, and its initial goal was to help the Philippines gain respect as the first Asian republic on a global scale.

He claimed that since that time, the nation has upheld decolonization, human rights, and equality ideals.

The leader in encouraging safe and orderly migration and a fervent supporter of climate action, he stated, “These fundamental principles have shaped our legacy as a champion of the rules-based order and multilateralism.”

He stated that the DFA’s fundamental principle currently is to advance freedom “not only within our country but also in the international community” and to exemplify the essence of an independent foreign policy.

“As we celebrate Kalayaan 2023, let us look to the future while cherishing the exceptional qualities that our ancestors exemplified and that continue to define the Filipino spirit today — courage, resilience, compassion, and a deep love of country,” he said.
