Cebu tourism is critical to the revival of the Philippines’ economy

Once mobility restrictions are further relaxed and international visitors return to one of the country’s top tourist destinations, the tourism sector in Cebu is anticipated to be a major contributor to the country’s post-pandemic economic recovery.

This prediction was stated by Jose Soberano III, chairman, and chief executive officer of Cebu Landmasters Inc. (CLI), during the launching of the company’s first resort development, the PHP2.5 billion Abaca Resort Mactan, which took place on Wednesday.

We have always aspired to make a positive contribution to the development of Cebu as an economic and tourist destination,โ€ Soberano said during an online news conference. โ€œAbaca Resort Mactan will place Cebu on the map for this growing breed of global visitors looking for a world-class, genuine, and distinctive vacation experience,โ€ says the developer.

According to Soberano, if global mobility is restored, tourism in the Visayas and Mindanao will be the engine that propels the region’s economy ahead, bringing back employment in the region’s primary economic driver.

Cebu will serve as the natural entryway to the Philippines for many visitors wanting to experience the country’s world-renowned beaches and other attractions, thanks to its direct flight connections from all over the world,โ€ says the airline. โ€œWe will be prepared for the ensuing boom,โ€ he said.

CLI has extended its hotel portfolio in the area with the announcement of the enlarged premium boutique hotel, which is scheduled to open in 2024, according to the company.

The Abaca Group’s founder and chief chef, Jason Hyatt, said that the Cebu-based restaurant operator is enthusiastic about their collaboration with CLI.

We are delighted that CLI has decided to work with us once again via their hospitality division since we are one of the country’s premier developers.” The fact that they have included me in their portfolio of well-established worldwide brands such as Accor, Radisson, and Ascott is very inspiring,โ€ he remarked.

With the launch of the resort in 2024, CLI hopes to increase its hotel portfolio to 1,433 rooms by 2025, with the completion of the resort. This is in keeping with CLI’s goal to grow its recurring revenue, which now accounts for 10% of the company’s total revenue.

The 125-room all-suite lodging with entirely panoramic ocean views is intended to fill a gap in the growing number of luxury resorts catering to global visitors in Cebu’s burgeoning tourism industry, which is preparing for more international travel.

It will be built on a 4,500-square-meter plot of land that was formerly occupied by the multi-award-winning Abaca Boutique Resort in Punta Engano, Lapu-Lapu City, which is a tourist boom hub and is home to some of Cebu’s most exclusive resorts.

Following the acquisition of the property by CLI in 2019, the company has entered into an agreement with The Abaca Group to continue running the hotel and offering premium experiences targeted to local and international visitors.

CLI enlisted the services of internationally renowned architectural company Bรผro Ole Scheeren, whose projects have received many accolades throughout the world, to design the resort and imbue it with a distinct sense of place desired by a new generation of high-end visitors.

In addition to the CTBUH Urban Habitat Award 2020 Winner DUO in Singapore, the Interlace in Singapore was named World Building of the Year 2015, and the MahaNakhon Tower in Bangkok is a mixed-use high-rise building that challenges the traditional typology of the skyscraper.

The resort’s design has also received local backing from AIDEA, one of the country’s top architectural practices.
