DepEd has implemented interventions to address education quality issues.
Even before the coronavirus pandemic, the Department of Education (DepEd) announced on Wednesday that it had implemented a number of interventions to address challenges in education quality across the country.
The Department of Education (DepEd) stated in a statement that learning poverty has been a problem for the country for years and that it has been proactively addressing the issue for a long time.
The statement was made in response to a new World Bank report claiming that the Philippines has a 90% “learning poverty” rate, which is defined as the percentage of children who are unable to read by the age of ten.
“We launched the Bawat Bata Bumabasa (3Bs) initiative nationwide prior to the pandemic, with our field offices aggressively coming up with contextualized approaches to increase reading proficiency among learners,” the statement said.
Aside from the 3Bs, the Department of Education’s Every Child a Reader Program (ECARP) includes strengthened initiatives in Early Language, Literacy, and Numeracy (ELLN), Mother Tongue-Based Multilingual Education (MTB-MLE), and Pedagogical Retooling in Mathematics, Languages, and Science (PRIMALS).
“Despite the public health situation, we continued to roll out our curriculum reforms, learning environment reforms, and teacher professional development reforms through our Sulong EduKalidad campaign,” the Department of Education said.
The agency is currently preparing for its participation in upcoming international assessments of its efforts to improve the country’s basic education quality.
