As the legislative bicameral conference committee began deliberations on the spending package on Tuesday, a leader of the House of Representatives said the proposed PHP5.024-trillion national budget for 2022 is on track for approval this month.

Deputy Speaker Bernadette Herrera, a member of the House delegation to the bicameral conference committee tasked with drafting the final form of the 2022 General Appropriations Act (GAA), said the bicam report on the national budget for 2022 will be approved next week, followed by ratification before Congress adjourns for the holidays.

“We expect the bicam will complete its work by next week so that Congress—the House of Representatives and the Senate—can ratify the report before adjourning the following week,” Herrera said in a statement.

Herrera praised House Appropriations Committee Chair Eric Yap and Senate Finance Committee Chair Sonny Angara for their “able leadership.”

“We can expect a speedy and decisive adoption of the 2022 national budget by the bicameral committee with Representative Yap and Senator Angara at the head,” Herrera stated.

She remains optimistic that President Rodrigo Duterte would sign the final version of the national budget for 2022 before Christmas.

Herrera stated, “Hopefully, President Duterte will be able to sign the budget before December 25.” “If this happens, it will be Congress’ best Christmas present to our kababayans.”

The proposed General Appropriations Act for 2022 is 11.5 percent higher than the PHP4.506 trillion passed this year.
