MANILA, Philippines — The top six hazards that digital payment users in the Asia Pacific Region (APAC) have faced, according to a recent survey by cybersecurity firm Kaspersky.

In a presentation on Tuesday, Kaspersky Southeast Asia general manager Yeo Siang Tiong revealed that 42 percent of the 1,618 respondents had experienced social engineering frauds via text or phone calls.

Phishing scams have been reported by 37 percent of respondents, while 35 percent have received false offers and deals.

31% of the respondents had come across a fake website. 19% and 12% of respondents, respectively, experienced fake and fraudulent apps, as well as bank account and card fraud.

“Approximately 75% of Filipinos use Android smartphones for digital payment transactions,” Siang Tiong added, noting that 157 of the respondents are Filipinos.

When Filipino respondents discovered the fraud, he said, they usually changed passwords for banking or mobile wallet apps.

“(Some of them) notified their relatives and friends, while others contacted their bank or mobile wallet provider,” he explained.

While the majority of respondents were aware of the many hazards in digital payments, only 48% of Filipino respondents believe antivirus software is important to secure their money and online data, according to Siang Tiong.

He believes that an additional security element, such as antivirus software, could further secure digital payment consumers.

One of the most important functions of antivirus software is that it warns users about risky spy programs and protects them from public Wi-Fi. According to him, the program might also warn them if spies are using the webcam.

In July 2021, Kaspersky gathered survey responses. Australia, China, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Thailand, and Vietnam were among the countries represented in the survey.
