MANILA – After receiving permission from Philippine authorities, Sinovac’s CoronaVac, a Chinese vaccine against coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19), can now be used for pediatric vaccination.

In a statement released Saturday, IP Biotech Group chairman Enrique Gonzales stated, “We applaud the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) and our vaccination specialists for approving Sinovac’s CoronaVac for ages 6 and above.”

IP Biotech Group is a pharmaceutical consortium that permitted the private sector’s initial procurement of Sinovac.

According to IP Biotech’s statement, the FDA authorized Sinovac’s emergency use authorization (EUA) on Saturday, allowing the Chinese vaccine to be used for minor vaccination. Dr. Oscar Gutierrez Jr., FDA officer-in-charge director general, signed the eight-page paper.

“Making this vaccine available to people in their younger years is a game-changer in terms of protecting the country’s children and retaining recent pandemic control accomplishments.” Gonzales noted, “This would also provide increased access and vaccine equity for the Philippines.”

According to research conducted in Chile, Sinovac had a 74 percent effectiveness rate among 1.9 million children aged 6 to 17.

It also saved the lives of 90% of children who were vaccinated with Sinovac but still had a breakthrough infection, as well as 100% of those who were admitted to the intensive care unit and died.

“The data will demonstrate that Sinovac is a very safe option for children and teenagers.” “This backs up the idea that inactivated virus vaccinations, including the flu vaccine, are safe and reliable,” Gonzales said.

Sinovac is used for pediatric vaccination in neighboring countries such as Indonesia, Malaysia, and China.

He went on to say that including Sinovac in the pediatric vaccine program will aid the country’s goal of inoculating 39 million youngsters.

For pediatric vaccination, the government has been employing the Pfizer and Moderna vaccine brands.
