Comelec appoints Ferolino to lead a working force to combat vote-buying
MANILA – Commissioner Aimee Ferolino of the Commission on Elections (Comelec) has been named head of the “Task Force Kontra Bigay,” an inter-agency body charged with investigating vote-buying charges.
“Commissioner Ferolino is a courageous commissioner; she is the deputy chairman of the security personnel exemption committee, as well as the chairman of other committees, including the shipping committee.” Commissioner George Erwin Garcia told reporters on Wednesday that she has a lot of expertise in the field because she previously worked as a field official before joining the Comelec.
Ferolino previously worked as the regional election supervisor in Davao del Norte before being appointed by President Rodrigo Duterte in 2020.
“She will organize task force meetings right once and create the required new guidelines, while also carrying out the Comelec’s mandate to either motu proprio or accept accusations alleging vote-buying,” he added.
The task force includes the Department of Justice, the Presidential Anti-Corruption Commission, the Department of the Interior and Local Government, the Philippine Information Agency, the National Bureau of Investigation, the Philippine National Police (PNP), and the Armed Forces of the Philippines, in addition to the Comelec.
Garcia previously stated that once the task force is created, vote-buying accusations can be lodged at the Comelec’s Law Department or any local Comelec office.
Meanwhile, Garcia predicted that the second presidential debate, which will take place on April 3, will be “far more fascinating.”
“On Sunday, there will be some adjustments to the debate format. Expect more witticisms, and tensions will run high among them,” he warned.
In response to criticism that the poll body’s debates are tedious, Garcia stated that the poll body simply wants to give everyone equal time and exposure.
“Perhaps the format is tedious to some viewers/listeners, but at the very least it is equitable to everybody.”
Garcia said Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. and Sara Duterte, who boycotted the first presidential and vice-presidential debates, had yet to confirm their attendance at the second debate, which will also be held at the Sofitel Harbor Tent in Pasay City.
