According to the PNP, 2.3K people have been arrested for violating the poll gun ban thus far.

MANILA, Philippines — According to the Philippine National Police (PNP), 2,313 persons have been arrested so far for breaching the election gun prohibition.

The PNP claimed in a statement that 2,249 people were captured, including 40 security guards, 14 police officers, and 10 military personnel.

A total of 2,209 police operations yielded 1,785 firearms, 10,157 rounds of ammunition, and 826 deadly weapons, according to the report.

According to the PNP’s newest data, the National Capital Region leads the way with 854, followed by Calabarzon (250), Central Visayas (241), and Central Luzon (231), and Western Visayas (137).

From January 9 to June 8, the carrying, carrying, or transporting of firearms or lethal weapons is illegal outside of the residence and in all public areas, according to Commission on Elections (Comelec) Resolution No. 10728.

Law enforcement officers are exempt from the restriction, although they must obtain permission from the Comelec and wear an agency-approved uniform while on official duty during the election period.

Violators face a sentence of not less than one year but not more than six years in jail, with no possibility of parole.

They also risk being barred from holding public office, losing their right to vote, and having their firearms licenses revoked or suspended indefinitely.

This year’s national and local elections in the Philippines will take place on May 9th.
