Palace: To rename NAIA, Congress must take action.
MANILA, Philippines โ Malacanang stated Tuesday that the plan to rename Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) to Manila International Airport (MIA) needed “congressional action.”
This comes after Duterte Youth Rep. Ducielle Cardema filed House Bill 10822, requesting that the airport’s name be changed to MIA in order to make it “easier” for passengers to find the country’s international gateway and to instill a “sense of pride” in Filipinos.
“There must be Congressional action to overturn Republic Act (RA) No. 6639, which renamed MIA to NAIA,” Communications Secretary Martin Andanar, who also serves as the acting presidential spokesperson, said in an online press briefing.
Andanar released a statement in which he noted that the Supreme Court (SC) dismissed a petition in 2020 that sought to overturn RA 6639, which renames MIA to NAIA.
“It should be remembered that a petition to annul the stated law was already dismissed by the Supreme Court in 2020,” he remarked.
In a bill filed on April 11, Cardema stated that renaming the country’s airport NAIA is a “self-serving and highly politicized conduct.”
She made the remarks while pointing out that the airport was renamed NAIA in 1987, during the presidency of Corazon Aquino, the wife of Senator Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino Jr., who was slain at the Manila airport on Aug. 21, 1983.
The petition of lawyer Lorenzo “Larry” Gadon challenging the legitimacy of RA 6639 was dismissed by the SC in September 2020 for lack of merit.
In his petition, Gadon claims that former President Benigno Aquino Jr. is not among the country’s “pantheon” of designated official heroes.
He went on to say that the change in the airport’s name was made without enough consultation with the Philippines’ National Historical Commission and its predecessor body.
Gadon further argued that the minimum number of years following a person’s death that must pass before a public place can be named after him was not observed.
