In Dagupan’s river system, 4.5K fingerlings were released.
DAGUPAN CITY, PHILIPPINES โ As part of the Bangus Festival celebrations this year, 4,500 bangus (milkfish), malaga, and other high-value fish were released into the city’s river system as a thanksgiving action.
Mayor Marc Brian Lim said rivers not only add to the scenic but also provide a source of income for many Dagupeos in an interview on Tuesday.
“Pasasalamat sa ating Lumikha na nagbigay sa atin ng mayamang kailogan na siya nating pinagkukunan ng masagang ani. Tama at nararapat din tayo sa ating mga natatanggap na biyaya. I-appreciate natin ang kagandahan ng ating mga ilog (We thank our Creator for providing us with rivers where we may harvest a plentiful supply of fish.) It is correct, and we should return the favors we have received. Let us appreciate our rivers’ beauty),” he urged.
The local government and the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) provided the fingerlings.
This is BFAR’s contribution to stock enhancement or resource enhancement, according to BFAR Ilocos regional director Rosario Segundina Gaerlan.
Meanwhile, the Bangus Festival 2022’s opening ceremony took place on Monday, with the festival lights being switched on.
The Bangus Festival this year, according to Lim, is a thanksgiving activity rather than a celebration, and it is also a day of economic opportunity for many Dagupeos.
The unveiling of the new Kalutan Ed Dalan Marker along A.B. Fernandez Avenue was one of the other highlights of the inaugural ceremony.
The Guinness World Records record for Dagupan City’s World’s Biggest Barbeque was set in 2003 during the Kalutan dan Dalan, when 10,000 pieces of bangus were roasted in the world’s longest barbecue grill, measuring 1,007.56 meters long.
“This is a symbol that the Bangus Festival is being returned to the people in its rightful place,” he explained.
He went on to say that the festival’s return after two years would be a “wonderful chance” for public market vendors, public transportation companies, and other businesses in the central business district to boost their revenue.
Due to the short amount of time available for preparation, only a few activities, including the much-anticipated Kalutan Ed Dalan street party, have been prepared, according to Lim.
Mural painting will be held on April 22, a cycling event will be held on April 24, a Youth Festival will be held at the People’s Astrodome and SM Center Dagupan on April 25, a mass wedding will be held at the People’s Astrodome on April 27, and the traditional event Bangus Rodeo will be held at the city plaza on April 28.
Bangus Festival was founded in August 2001 and officially launched by then-Mayor Benjamin Lim in 2002.
It was held not only to promote Dagupan’s bangus products, but also to develop the city’s own festival.
The event effectively cleared the way for other towns and communities in Pangasinan’s province to hold their own local celebrations.
