MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine National Police (PNP) has asked candidates and the general public to work together with authorities to ensure their protection and safety during this year’s elections.

“We would like to remind our candidates and the general public that coordination with authorities is critical so that the PNP can provide security assistance to avert any trouble,” PNP spokesperson Brig. Gen. Roderick Augustus Alba said in a statement released Tuesday evening.

Following the shooting at a meeting with presidential aspirant Leody de Guzman’s camp with members of the indigenous peoples in Quezon, Bukidnon, a PNP official issued a reminder.

During the incident, two people were hurt.

“We are currently gathering adequate information and determining the circumstances surrounding the crime,” Alba added, “so it is premature to assume the motive is election-related.”
