MANILA, Philippines — A booze prohibition will be enacted across the country on May 8 and 9 as part of steps to secure Monday’s national and local elections, as the Philippine National Police (PNP) reminds the public of election laws and other banned acts.

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) has issued Resolution No. 10746, which makes it illegal to sell, furnish, offer, buy, serve, or consume alcoholic liquor within the designated period.

“Anyone found breaching any of the requirements may incur a punishment of jail for not less than one year but not more than six years without probation,” stated Lt. Gen. Vicente Danao Jr., PNP Chief Officer-in-Charge/Security Task Force Commander, citing Comelec Resolution No. 10746.

He stated that the PNP is requesting public discipline and rigorous adherence in order to avoid any disruption or heated altercation during those critical days.

This will also act as a warning to business owners to avoid displaying alcoholic beverages at their establishments in order to deter clients from drinking in public.

“All we want is to keep peace and order in every community.” In a statement, Danao stated, “Let us exercise our freedom of expression and right to vote in a calm and sacred manner.”

The municipal administration in Pasig advised citizens to rigorously follow the alcohol ban.

“Pasigueos, I wish you an honest and peaceful election!” a post on social media read.

On May 9, the Pasig City Sports Center, Pasig Mega Parking, SM East Ortigas, and Arcovia immunization locations will be closed.

Vaccinations will resume on May 10th, with the exception of the Pasig City Sports Center, which will reopen on May 11th.

The campaign ban goes into effect one day before the national and local elections. Campaign activities are no longer permitted for any candidate or supporter.

On election day, campaign materials will be distributed, particularly inside voting centers.

On election day, PNP officers would not be permitted to enter polling stations unless the Electoral Board requests their aid in an emergency.

The 225,000-strong police force, Danao promised the public, would ensure calm, orderly, and credible elections.

“As PNP OIC, we will assure (a) secure, accurate, and fair elections in 2022, and we will protect the Constitution’s and the Filipino people’s mandates.” “Sa mga nagbabalak mandaya (those planning to sabotage the election), just a stern warning sa inyo ito (to you), we will use the full force of the law against you, and kung mahuli kayo pasensya, siguradong may pagkakalagyan kayo (if you get caught, you will face the full force of the law),” Danao told reporters on the sidelines

He also emphasized the need of police officers remaining apolitical and treating all candidates fairly.

“‘Let us, the pulis, remain apolitical and non-partisan.” Regardless of the candidate, our police force must remain apolitical and non-partisan. Candidates should be treated equally regardless of who they are),” he stated.
