Despite overcrowding in public places throughout the campaign period and election day, cases of coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) remained low in Eastern Visayas, according to the Department of Health (DOH) regional office here on Monday.

In a phone conversation, DOH regional information officer Jelyn Lopez-Malibago said election-related activities did not result in an increase in new cases.

“For the time being, we cannot see an increase.” Despite the tiny increase, it is hardly concerning. “We attribute it to Eastern Visayas’ strong vaccination coverage,” Malibago told the journalists.

The DOH only found 22 new cases out of 1,687 samples examined in four laboratories in the region between May 9 and May 15. The number is more than double the ten new instances reported a week ago.

The region has 62,104 Covid-19 cases, 61,415 recoveries, and 668 deaths as of May 16.

“Only one severe case of Covid-19 has been hospitalized in our hospitals.” Only 14 of the 49 beds designated for Covid-19 patients are occupied, according to Malibago.

She ascribed the low number of instances to widespread coronavirus immunization.

Approximately 2,680,585 people, or 68 percent of the target population of 3,892,126, have been fully vaccinated against Covid-19, with 280,495 people receiving booster doses.

“The increased immunization campaign against Covid-19 is still underway across the region. Vaccines remain our best line of defense against the virus and its variations, according to Malibago.

The DOH advised the public to remain attentive and maintain the basic public health standards in all situations, notwithstanding the lower alert level status in different sections of the region and the progressive drop in cases.
