SEAG medalists will receive additional incentives from PRRD: Go
MANILA, Philippines โ Senator Christopher “Bong” Go revealed Tuesday that President Rodrigo Duterte will award additional incentives to around 400 athletes and coaches who earned gold at the 31st Southeast Asian Games (SEAG) in Hanoi, Vietnam, in addition to the incentives allowed by the law.
On Tuesday, the Philippine delegation will pay the President a courtesy call at Malacaang Palace.
They’re already arriving in bunches and going through admission processes as of this writing.
Go, who chairs the Committee on Sports, praised the Filipino athletes’ commitment and assured them that he would continue to fight for their welfare and interests.
“We owe you a debt of gratitude for your sacrifice and dedication. In a statement, he stated, “Maraming salamat sa pagpapakita ng inyong angking galing sa larangan ng (Thank you very much for demonstrating your brilliance in the field of) sports.”
Go urged Filipinos to show their support for the athletes in all of their endeavors, adding that their triumphs bring the country respect and glory.
“Hinihimok ko rin po ang ating mga kababayan na magka-isa para sa ating mga atletang Pilipino at suportahan sila sa anumang athletic event na kanilang lalahukan,” he remarked.
With 52 gold, 70 silver, and 104 bronze medals, the Philippines finished fourth overall in the biannual meet, behind the host, Thailand, and Indonesia.
The SEA Games were originally scheduled for November and December of last year, but were postponed because to the pandemic.
The Philippine Sports Commission is required by Republic Act No. 10699, or the National Athletes and Coaches Incentives and Benefits Act, to provide financial incentives to medal-winning athletes: PHP300,000 for each individual gold medal, PHP150,000 for silver medalists, and PHP60,000 for bronze medalists.
Carlos Yulo, who topped all victors in gymnastics with five gold and two silver medals, would receive PHP1.8 million.
Medalists who set new Philippine, Southeast Asian Games, or global records may be eligible for monetary prizes.
In the past, President Duterte has given athletes additional financial incentives and other monetary benefits.
According to Go, the government should continue to invest in programs, financial aid, and infrastructure to help athletes achieve their objectives.
