Over P136-M worth of Ilocos earthquake damage

The Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (PDRRMC) from both Ilocos Norte and Ilocos Sur provinces said on Monday that it is believed that the severe earthquake last week caused over PHP136 million in infrastructure damage, largely to schools and century-old buildings.

13 public schools in this city and the nearby villages of Adams, Dumalneg, Pinili, Paoay, and Dingras were partially destroyed, according to the PDRRMC in Ilocos Norte.

According to the report, the Immaculate Conception parish in Batac City and the century-old church convent in Bacarra both sustained some damage.

In certain public buildings, including the municipal hall of Paoay, the municipal port of Badoc, and a birthing facility in Adams, there were numerous cracks on the walls and ceilings.

Additionally, it was claimed that at least 10 residential homes in the towns of Pinili, Dingras, and Marcos had minor damage.

Infrastructural damage in the province has been detected, and Marcel Tabije, a local disaster risk reduction and management officer in Ilocos Norte, estimated that the cost of repairs might be PHP84.53 million.

As of August 1, infrastructure including historical landmarks, ancestral homes, bridges, and governmental structures in the neighboring province of Ilocos Sur had also sustained damage totaling more than PHP52 million.

The Bantay watch tower and St. Augustine Parish Church, the St. Paul Metropolitan Cathedral and bell tower, Vigan’s fabled Calle Crisologo homes, Candon City’s St. John de Sahagun church and belfry, and Caoayan’s Our Lady of Hope Parish Church are among the places on the list.

The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) in Region 1 reported that the Tagudin-Cervantes route and intermittent sections remain blocked while clearance activities are ongoing due to the recurrence of land or rockslides caused by constant tremors and severe rainfall.

A different route can be taken to get to the municipality of Cervantes, according to a road notice.

According to a post on the DPWH Region 1 Facebook page, “If bound to Cervantes from Candon City, take Junction Santiago-Banayoyo-Lidlidda-San Emilio Quirino road (45.736 kilometers) and Cervantes-Quirino road (26.511 kilometers) and vice versa.

The notice also noted that all other national highways and bridges are open to all kinds of vehicles.

However, commuters are urged to exercise caution when using impacted national roads and bridges because of ongoing earthquakes.
