The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) issued a warning to the general public on Wednesday about the potential negative consequences of the two weather systems that are now impacting the nation.

In a press conference, NDRRMC spokesperson and Assistant Secretary for Civil Defense Bernardo Rafaelito Alejandro IV added that they are currently keeping an eye on any potential impacts that Tropical Depression Gardo and Super Typhoon Hinnamnor may have on Batanes and other areas of extreme Northern Luzon.

When “Hinnamnor” enters the Philippine Area of Responsibility, the local name “Henry” will be given to it (PAR).

“We should continue to monitor the situation, keeping an eye on the advisories and warnings, and always preparing for the worst-case scenario. However, as of right now, there hasn’t been a landfall that has been reported. We still have time to plan, and the projection that is expected to come true in the near future will be available soon. As the (weather disturbances) are severe, but so far there is no expected landfall in the country, let’s monitor constantly, paying close attention to the advisories, and we should better prepare for any eventualities. Alejandro, on the other hand, reaffirmed that the OCD has the resources and supplies to provide aid to individuals who may be impacted by the consequences of the two weather disturbances.

“At the DSWD, we have a considerable supply of food. We also have non-food products in storage and ready access to funds from the QRF. We have access to it whenever we need it. Of course, the LGUs have also set aside their monies, so we are prepared. We have time to be ready “Added he.

According to Alejandro, based on the next meteorological report to be released by the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration, the NDRRMC may issue a “red” or “blue” alert (PAGASA).

According to PAGASA, “Gardo” was last located 1,065 kilometers east of extreme Northern Luzon as of 11 a.m. on Wednesday. It is unlikely to have a direct impact on the nation’s weather.

It is expected to generally proceed in a north-northwesterly or northwesterly direction beyond the PAR, interacting with “Hinnamnor.”

The NDRRMC has in the meantime instructed its affiliates to get ready for the weather disturbance.

“In conjunction with the current weather system affecting the nation, the NDRRMC has issued a general directive to all chairpersons of RDRRMCs/OCD (Office of Civil Defense) regional directors as well as a directive to impacted regions (projected to be Regions I, II, and CAR). The concerned have also been given instructions to: 1. Monitor carefully the warnings and other advisories issued by DOST-PAGASA, DENR-MGB, and other surveillance agencies; 2. Encourage the start of pre-disaster risk assessments at the regional level if needed; and 3 “said Alejandro.

Additionally, he stated that it has been recommended to localize the warning to communities within each area of responsibility and to increase risk communication.
