74.9K farmers and fishers are impacted by Paeng.
More than 74,900 farmers and fishermen have been impacted by Typhoon Paeng, a Department of Agriculture (DA) official reported on Thursday.
A total of PHP2.74 billion in damages was estimated for the agricultural sector, with a loss of production of at least 101,831 metric tons.
The projected total value impacted in the poultry and livestock sector was PHP9.49 million.
“Regional field offices for (the DA) have allocations and interventions, like giving out grains, corn, and various vegetable seeds. There are fingerlings and equipment for fishermen in the fisheries business. The assistance of fishermen with damaged boats is also possible “At a press conference, DA Assistant Secretary Kristine Evangelista noted.
A three-year, zero-interest loan of up to PHP25,000 is also available to farmers, according to Evangelista.
She claimed that the DA is collaborating with LGUs to lower the cost of goods in trading posts.
“Since we closely collaborate with the LGUs and those in charge of the various trade posts, we can anticipate when an intervention is required to reduce vegetable costs. We have kept track of market price growth, “She spoke.
According to Evangelista, the DA’s monitoring revealed a PHP20โPHP30 increase in vegetable prices.
The DA is considering lowering this to PHP10 and PHP20 until prices return to their pre-typhoon levels for those who saw a PHP40 hike.
Evangelista stated that the DA is now looking at offering crop insurance to farmers.
Since this is one of the methods to give farmers a sense of protection, she said, “We are looking at how we can make insurance more efficient for the farmers.”
She asked the general people to get in touch with the DA’s regional field offices, saying they are willing to offer interventions and support.
“Our regional field offices are working around the clock to assist them,” Evangelista said, adding that the LGUs, municipal, and provincial agriculturists are also involved.
