Marcos and other leaders attend the inauguration of the ASEAN meetings.
At the 40th and 41st Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summits and Related Summits’ inaugural ceremony on Friday in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. joined his fellow Southeast Asian leaders.
Hun Sen, the prime minister of Cambodia, welcomed Marcos and his wife, First Lady Louise “Liza” Araneta-Marcos when they arrived at the Sokha Phnom Penh Hotel on Friday morning.
For the four-day ASEAN Summit and Related Summits, which will end on November 13, Marcos is now in Phnom Penh with his Cabinet secretaries and other Philippine government representatives.
The most recent political, security, economic, and sociocultural events, as well as international challenges affecting Southeast Asia and beyond, are likely to be discussed by Marcos and his fellow ASEAN leaders.
Marcos will also attend summits with Australia, Canada, China, Japan, India, the Republic of Korea, and the United States, which are conversation partners with ASEAN.
It is anticipated that the leaders of Southeast Asia and their dialogue partners would examine existing and new areas of cooperation and exchange opinions on regional and global challenges.
A “productive” day
Along with other ASEAN leaders on Thursday, Marcos attended sessions with the ASEAN Business Advisory Council, youth leaders, and members of the Southeast Asian Parliament.
He also had a meeting with King Norodom Sihamoni of Cambodia, who welcomed the ASEAN leaders to the Royal Palace with a royal audience.
In order to persuade the Cambodian business community to invest in the Philippines, Marcos also held a roundtable conversation with them. He assured them that, based on the nation’s economic data for the third quarter of 2022, his administration was able to lead the economy on the correct path.
His first day in Cambodia was “productive,” he said.
“At least having a productive meeting again makes us pleased. Again, it appears that we are concentrating on and attempting to do the right things “In a Friday video message to Palace media, Marcos made the statement.
Bilateral encounters
On Thursday, Hun Sen, the ASEAN chairperson this year, and Pham Minh Chinh, the prime minister of Vietnam, also met separately.
During the meeting with Chinh, Marcos and his colleague decided to strengthen their cooperation in a number of sectors, including agriculture, marine security, trade, and defense.
The Vietnamese Prime Minister also praised Marcos for the Philippine government’s successful Covid-19 reaction and for generating one of Asia’s highest rates of gross domestic product (GDP) growth.
In a private discussion with Hun Sen to end the day, Marcos and Hun Sen reaffirmed their commitment to advancing bilateral ties between their two nations.
“Therefore, it was successful, and there are still two days left. And I consider bilateral relationships to be veryโฆ It is fascinating to hear different nations’ perspectives on various topics that came up in what they called the interface sessions “said Marcos.
The fact that we conduct our business with foreign nations and private firms at bilateral meetings has also made them crucial, he continued.
