An analyst says closer connections with China will aid the rehabilitation of the Philippine economy.
In order to maintain the pace of the Philippine economy’s recovery, the Marcos government should work to strengthen relations with China, according to a political analyst on Friday.
The bilateral meeting between President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. and Chinese President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the 29th Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Leaders Meeting in Bangkok, Thailand, will have a significant impact on the country’s economic recovery, particularly in creating jobs, broadening the tax base, and combating poverty, according to Froilan Calilung, a political science professor at the University of Santo Tomas.
“I think it’s fantastic that our President met with the leader of China on a one-on-one basis because that will have a significant impact on the way our economy is rebuilt. I also think it’s great that our Pangulo is now preparing to meet with the president of the People’s Republic of China. and I believe that in order to advance our national interests, it is truly a matter of how we will navigate our friendships with other nations “added Calilung.
The encounter, according to Calilung, is in line with Marcos’ foreign policy of “friend to all [and] enemy of none.”
“I believe the President is emphasizing that we need to uphold good standing, friendships rooted in amity and on cooperation within and among countries, especially iyong mga masasabi nating mga makapangyarihang bansa (what we regard to be powerful countries),” he remarked.
He emphasized that China is becoming a global economic superpower and that the Philippines will need a lot of assistance from the latter to keep its economic initiatives moving forward.
“Keep in mind that our home policy extends to our foreign policy. Therefore, whatever we want to accomplish domestically, we also pursue it internationally. Kung ano ‘yung gusto natin na makuha at makamit domestically, ito ay inilalakad natin on the international level “explained he.
“And I think this cooperation that we’re having right now with China, and not just with China, but even with the US, with Asean, with APEC and other regional blocks in the world,” he continued, “I think it sends a strong message that the President really is not there to antagonize any country for as long as they are willing to support and adhere to our principles as well as a country.”
Marcos’ initial encounter with President Xi Jinping, which he called “a good exchange,” was where he first expressed his excitement about his planned state visit to China.
After the meeting, Marcos remarked, “It’s the first time I’ve met President Xi Jinping and I was very delighted that we were able to have this opportunity here in the APEC Discussion in Bangkok to have a bilateral meeting.” In his words, the meeting was “kind of a getting to know you” between him and the Chinese president.
The relationship between the Philippines and China was also discussed by Marcos and Xi, especially in regard to infrastructure, energy, and people-to-people ties.
He stated that additional information regarding the talks between the Philippines and China would be discussed during his official visit to Beijing in the first week of January 2023.
To have a more thorough discussion of regional and international concerns, they both decided to arrange additional bilateral discussions.
Malacaang reports that Xi congratulated Marcos on winning the presidential election on May 9.
Marcos added that Xi was “surprised” to see Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, a former president and current representative for the Pampanga 2nd district, who was with him when they met.
“…They spent a little time recalling previous encounters, which I believe improved the atmosphere of the gathering. Consequently, I am excited about January and the state visit to China, he remarked.
Arroyo gave Marcos “advice,” according to Martin Romualdez, speaker of the house, on his meeting with Xi. He said he had no idea what these were though. Given that China is a significant economic partner and investor, he claimed that Marcos’ visit with the Chinese leader was crucial.
