The Bureau of Immigration (BI) issued a warning to foreigners on Monday about phony operations orders to check entertainment venues for illegal and overstaying foreigners that were purportedly submitted by people acting as its staff.

After learning that the directive was making the rounds in various social media chat groups, immigration commissioner Norman Tansingco issued the warning.

The directive labeled “Checking overstaying and illegal employment in various entertainment locations,” according to him, has not been issued by the bureau.

Immigration officers are apparently instructed to check Manila’s nightlife venues by the fictitious directive.

The places to look for illegal immigrants include pubs, karaoke joints, music venues, golf clubs, bowling alleys, internet cafés, amusement parks, casinos, hotels, guest houses, and restaurants.

“The BI has not issued any such order. Our agents must obtain a mission order before making an arrest; they are not allowed to indiscriminately check out businesses, the BI head continued.

A mission order is only granted “after careful examination and proof that the subject foreign individual has indeed violated immigration regulations,” according to Tansingco.

He thinks that criminal gangs in the nation are using false directives to intimidate outsiders and con them.

Then he exhorted foreigners to notify law enforcement of such an event right away.
