Under dimmer lights, Switzerland prepares for Christmas

Christmas in Switzerland won’t sparkle as brightly as it did in the past because of mandatory energy-saving regulations that can dampen the festive mood.

Like every other nation in Europe, Switzerland is making cuts to its budget in order to deal with an energy shortage brought on by Russia throughout the winter. These cuts would affect Christmas decorations, lighting, stores, and holiday markets.

In order to save energy and promote a festive mood, most communities adopt strategies like energy-efficient LED lights, candles, biogas for heating, and limiting lighting hours.

Geneva

The English Garden at the harbor, which at this time of year is transformed into a Christmas Garden, does not permit the use of electric heaters. Chalets heated by biogas are dotted throughout the garden.

LEDs will be used to illuminate the Christmas markets, and illuminated signs will be switched off at night.

The city’s famous water feature will also undergo some energy-saving modifications. The tourist attraction typically continuously shoots water up to a height of 140 meters (459 feet), but the city plans to reduce that height.

Zurich

Christmas light operation hours have been curtailed. The advent-announcing Lucy Christmas Lights on Zurich’s Bahnhofstrasse will be on for three and a half fewer hours each day.

Basel

Christmas markets and city center lighting will only be open in the late afternoon. Markets are asked to refrain from using any extra machinery.

Lucerne

The city will strive to create holiday magic with 500 candle lanterns instead of its customary Christmas lights. Additionally, a Christmas tree will be lit utilizing muscle power, with users producing the required energy for lighting by pedaling.

Saint Gallen

St. Gallen will hang up its well-known All Stars, 700 star-shaped lights, refusing to let go of the holiday mood. The municipal council is advising individuals not to decorate their homes for the holidays, and business lighting will be turned off at night.

Chur

Even while the lights in the city center are on, as usual, there will be no additional lighting for the celebration in the suburbs. According to reports, this will reduce energy use in half.

Lausanne

The Bo Noel Christmas markets, which are open to visitors from November 18 to December 31, are trying to use 20% less energy. The illumination is turned off between 11.30 p.m. and 11.30 a.m. At night, beverage refrigerators are also shut off.

The Lausanne Lumieres Festival modified its structure to use four projections rather than eight, which reduced energy use by 60 percent. Additionally, the show will run for three rather than four weeks.

Winterthur

The duration of the holiday lights in Winterthur’s old town has been decreased in half.

Uster

One of the biggest cities in the canton of Zurich, Uster, decided to forgo Christmas lights this year.

Solothurn

Public lighting will be replaced with Christmas lights, and homeowners and businesses are encouraged to refrain from using electrical Christmas decorations.

Baden

One of the cities, Baden, will try to get into the holiday spirit by stringing over 10,000 LED lights over the streets and lanes.

Bern

While some cities and event planners are reducing brightness, Christmas lights will only be turned on for a few hours at night. At 10 o’clock at night, the municipality will turn off the lights.

An appropriate hard plastic surface will also take the place of the ice rink in the Bundesplatz.

Aargau

For minimal energy usage, the governing council has advised towns and municipalities to only turn on Christmas lights between 4 p.m. and 11 p.m.

Neuchatel

People will still be able to stroll beneath Christmas lights at the lakeside despite the lower lighting.

Sion

The illumination in the city center of the Valais canton’s capital has been reduced. In comparison to last year, the lights will be switched off at 9 p.m. Additionally, the lighting season will be one week less than normal, from December 8 to January 3.
