The DA must confirm the “safety” of the seized white onions.

The phytosanitary inspection of the seized illegal onions is expected to be completed this week or the following week, according to the Department of Agriculture (DA), which announced the goal on Monday.

Before being made available at Kadiwa markets, the onions, according to the DA, required to be inspected.

Rex Estoperez, a deputy spokesperson for the DA, stated during the Laging Handa public briefing that food safety is crucial for consumers because these onions were mistakenly labeled as pastries.

“30 million PHP available. ‘Yung marami ho iyang mga nakumpiska na ‘yan (That is around PHP30 million.) Napakalaking halaga niyan, nagpanggap na pastries. That’s a significant sum. It was incorrectly listed as a pastry. Additionally, many items were seized. However, he added, “These are white onions.

Ing kailan? โ€˜ According to the schedule, the inspection should be completed this week or the following week. According to our timeline, the inspection ought to be finished this week or the following week, depending on when it starts. We’ll ascertain whether the shipment is secure and will be accepted. It’s crucial that we feel secure),” he continued.

The 100,000 kg of white onions confiscated at the Manila International Container Port are the ones to which the DA is alluding.

unreported white onions

In the meanwhile, the DA informed customers that all white onions, whether offered for sale online or in physical markets, are prohibited.

“Lahat ng pumasok po na puti, iligal po iyan, at least sa mga merkado po natin, po iyan. It’s okay to say so because the Bureau of Plant Industry has never had a problem importing sibuyas. Therefore, if there are no papers present, it is being smuggled. Even if they are offered in marketplaces, white onions are forbidden to import into the country. The Bureau of Plant Industry hasn’t issued any import permits for onions, so if they aren’t covered by paperwork, they are being smuggled, which is unlawful, according to Estoperez.

Additionally, he advised citizens to alert authorities right once if they discover white onions being sold illegally anywhere in the nation, either online or in actual stores.

Additionally, the DA reminded customers that it is always fine-tuning its procedures to guarantee food security in the nation, as desired by President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., who also serves as the concurrent agriculture secretary.

“Ginagawa naman namin lahat kung kailangan namin ayusin, baguhin, at tingnan uli ang ating mga system,” the speaker said. ‘Yan po namin gagawin ka sa kapakanan ng ating consumer, po. Balansehin po natin sa ating producer po (We are taking all the necessary steps to improve the system and make changes. We will balance the needs of our producers and consumers when making this decision, he continued.

The DA also urged businesses to stop taking advantage of customers, support the administration’s goals, and support regional manufacturers by refraining from imports.

For the following year, he stated, “There won’t be any price increases or shortages because we’re looking into it, cooperating with producers, and making sure to avoid the word importation as much as possible.”
