A bill to establish the Negros Island Region was passed by the Senate Committee on Local Government on Monday.

Senator JV Ejercito’s Senate Bill 1236 aims to reunite Negros Occidental and Oriental provinces once more. Ejercito thinks that uniting the two islands would make it simpler for the Negrenses to use the services of the federal government.

“Malinaw po ang pangangailangan ng ating mga kababayan sa Negros Occidental at Negros Oriental na gawing isang rehiyon ang Negros Island upang mas mapabilis at mailapit ang mga serbisyo ng national government sa kanila (The need of our compatriots in Negros Occidental and Negros Oriental to turn Negros Island into a region

Ejercito noted that the law, along with the other similar proposals made by his colleagues, is essential to improving the effectiveness of the delivery of government services, as well as bringing convenience to the locals while also supporting the administration’s goal of rightsizing.

The senator continued, “We also feel that this will also be the means to make the aforementioned region more dynamic. Naniniwala rin po tayo na ito rin ay magiging daan upang mas maging masigla ang nasabing rehiyon.”

Other senators seeking the same legislation include Lito Lapid, Sherwin Gatchalian, Ramon “Bong” Revilla, and Senate President Juan Miguel “Migz” Zubiri (Senate Bill 89, SB 812, SB 1422). (SB 1469).

Residents of Negros Occidental and Negros Oriental still have to travel to either Iloilo or Cebu to conduct business with the regional offices of a number of national government agencies, according to Zubiri, whose family originated from Kabankalan, Negros Occidental.

“It’s the simplicity of conducting business with the government. Cost-wise, nagawa ni. Buildings may be constructed if the cost is the only factor. We have buildings already,” Zubiri stated.

As soon as the committee report is delivered to his office, Senate Majority Leader Joel Villanueva has committed to schedule the legislation for second reading right away.

The NIR was created in 2015 thanks to Executive Order No. 183. However, it was eliminated in 2017 by Executive Order No. 38.
