Construction workers’ insurance coverage should be required

Sen. Sherwin Gatchalian filed a bill on Monday requiring companies to provide construction employees with mandatory insurance coverage due to the risk and danger inherent in their line of work.

In order to ensure prompt and effective delivery of indemnity to injured workers, Gatchalian said that Senate Bill 821, also known as the Construction Workers Insurance Act, seeks to require employers of construction workers to provide mandatory group personal accident insurance coverage. According to Gatchalian, the insurance must take effect from the day the employee reported to work until the completion of the construction project or upon the termination of the employment contract.

“I think offering insurance to our construction workers will force their employers to implement stronger safety measures that will safeguard the security and safety of their employees. The senator noted in his statement, “Additionally, this would enable prompt and effective indemnification distribution to construction workers, which is the fundamental aim of this proposal.

According to Gatchalian, insurance coverage must provide a fair level of compensation in the event that an accident results in the worker’s death or disability.

The employer is responsible for paying all insurance premiums; the wages of the construction workers are not to be used to offset this cost.

The required minimum insurance coverage should be PHP75,000 for natural death, PHP100,000 for accidental death, PHP150,000 for death on the job, PHP50,000 for loss of both hands and both feet, PHP50,000 for loss of one hand and one eye’s sight, and PHP50,000 for loss of one foot and one eye’s sight.

In circumstances where the disease is directly related to or develops while working, the construction employees will also be entitled to receive fair and fast medical benefits.

We cannot dispute that, in many cases, labor in the construction industry is quite risky; therefore, we need to take good care of their safety and health, said Gatchalian. “Hindi maikakaila na sa maraming pagkakataon, ang trabaho ng mga construction workers ay mapanganib,” he added.
