DMW is urged to safeguard trapped OFWs’ jobs amid flight delays

In the wake of technical difficulties that caused air navigation facilities at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport to go offline, the chair of the House Committee on Overseas Workers Affairs urged the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) to take all necessary measures to protect the welfare and employment of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) on Tuesday (NAIA).

“I immediately request that the DMW ensure our OFWs have the protection they require from termination or punishment and reassure them that their jobs are secure and they shouldn’t be concerned. This interruption should not be at the expense of our OFWs, “Representative Ron Salo of the Kabayan party list made a statement.

“The worries of our OFWs are clearly known to us, and we comprehend them. The government must take all necessary measures to prevent our OFWs from being penalized or, worse yet, dismissed as a result of this regrettable incident “Added he.

Salo made the comment after OFWs who were returning to work after the Christmas holiday and OFWs who were about to be deployed voiced concern that their employers may fire them or reject them for failing to show up for work because of the cancellation of flights on January 1st.

On New Year’s Day, more than 300 flights were canceled, diverted, or delayed, impacting more than 60,000 people.

The Department of Transportation (DOTR), Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP), and National Aviation Administration (NAIA) have all declared that they anticipate that all operations will return to normal within 72 hours.

The party-list senator also asked private recruitment firms to get in touch with their international counterparts or employers right once to coordinate updates on the impacted OFWs’ travel status.

He suggested that managing agencies should take the same action with their overseas principals in regard to the impacted seafarers.

Salo stated, “I also call on the other authorities of the government to guarantee that the necessities are given for our OFWs and other travelers while they are stranded in our airports.
