ASF prompts Iloilo province to begin hog repopulation
In order to maintain the hog sector in Iloilo in the wake of the ASF infection, the provincial administration plans to commence the repopulation of hogs in red zone areas and tighten biosecurity measures, particularly on backyard farms.
“We must adapt to changing circumstances. We must adapt to the circumstances. We want to increase the biosecurity measures in our area as we continue to fight for the province’s hog supply, said Arthur Defensor Jr., the governor of Iloilo, in a Friday interview.
On Friday, the governor met with the provincial and local veterinarians, the Department of Agriculture Bureau of Animal Industry (DA-BAI), and to debate the plan’s future.
“We need to consider our supply for the next three months. Even with ASF, we must figure out how to breed, he continued.
The goal is to test the Oton and San Miguel municipalities, where the first instances of ASF were officially reported.
In places where there are no more occurrences of the disease or the hog population has completely declined, the plan is to use artificial insemination rather than a boar to prevent potential ASF spread.
According to the governor, about 40% of the hog population in Oton was unaffected.
According to data from the Office of the Provincial Veterinarian’s January 4 data, 2,139 hogs in the municipality perished from probable ASF, and as of December 14, 2022, 898 swine heads had been depopulated.
Only 158 suspected ASF deaths in pigs occurred in San Miguel as of January 4 compared to 466 depopulated pigs as of December 14.
Defensor claimed that even for the purpose of providing the towns, it is the objective to progressively replace the lost pigs.
As of Jan. 3, there have been cases of ASF reported in 11 towns, and the governor warned that the disease could spread further.
Oton, San Miguel, Leganes, New Lucena, Alimodian, Santa Barbara, Mina, Barotac Nuevo, Dumangas, and Banate are the only towns out of the 11 that are still in the red or infected zone, while Barotac Viejo is still in the pink or buffer zone.
