ASEAN countries work to keep the area peaceful and stable: DFA
Members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) do a lot to keep peace and stability in the area, even though tensions are rising between growing powers like the US and China.
“We, the countries around this region, are growing into middle powers and middle-income countries, and we have a very important role to play, especially in the context of ASEAN centrality, where we are right in the middle of a number of bigger countries,” Foreign Affairs Secretary Enrique Manalo said Wednesday in a CNBC SQUAWK BOX interview.
He also said that making this role happen could help the region grow and develop.
He also said that the competition between the US and China affects not only the Philippines but also other countries in the area.
The Philippines is a close partner of the US because the two countries have been friends for a long time.
On the other hand, the Philippines and China are also very close when it comes to business.
“So these are the kinds of things we want to take advantage of. We also have to admit that there is competition, but I think competition is better than conflict “Manalo said.
When asked if the Supreme Court’s decision about some parts of the South China Sea would affect the relationship between China and the Philippines, Manalo said that the Department of Foreign Affairs has confirmed what President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. said about maritime issues, which that they shouldn’t define the whole relationship between China and the Philippines and that they should be handled with the interests of the Filipino people in mind.
“Oil and gas are a big part of how we work together. When they went to Beijing, the two leaders actually came to an agreement on a number of issues, such as agriculture, infrastructure, and even renewable energy “he said. “So there are a lot of different ways that the Philippines and China work together. So, this is pretty much one part. Both leaders also talked about political security issues “he said.
