UN urges swift action to combat severe child malnutrition

The violence, climatic shocks, continued effects of the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) pandemic, and growing costs of living have all led to acute malnutrition in millions of children, according to a call from the UN on Thursday.

In a joint statement, the five UN agencies stated that “more than 30 million children currently suffer from wasting or acute malnutrition, and eight million of these children are severely wasted, the deadliest form of undernutrition.”

Afghanistan, Burkina Faso, Chad, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia, Haiti, Kenya, Madagascar, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, and Yemen are among the 15 nations.

To address the “extraordinary needs of this rising crisis, before it is too late,” it was stated that a larger investment was required.

According to the UN, children with the disorder have compromised immune systems and are more likely to die from common pediatric illnesses.

According to the report, “eight million children are severely wasted, the deadliest form of undernutrition, making them 12 times more likely to die than kids who eat enough to stay alive.”

The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations Qu Dongyu stated that the circumstance will probably worsen this year.

“We must make sure that young children, girls, and pregnant and nursing women can obtain, afford, and consume healthful diets. Working together across all sectors, we urgently need to take action to save lives and combat the underlying causes of acute malnutrition “added he.
