Davos protesters pressure international leaders to reconsider the current economic system

As the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Switzerland, which begins on Monday, approached, a number of organizations organized anti-Davos protests to voice their displeasure with multinational corporations for escalating environmental damage caused by human activity.

In Davos Postplatz on Sunday, activists from the Strike-WEF Collective and the Young Socialists of Switzerland assembled to denounce the Davos elite, accusing them of hypocrisy and elitism for, among other things, flying in private planes to a meeting to discuss climate change.

One of the protest leaders, Gianna Catrina, 21, told Anadolu that the current economic system “is the root of the environmental difficulties and also a lot of social problems,” which are contributing to the ecological disaster.

We are here to oppose the current state of the world economy, which she said should alter from one that prioritizes profit to one that puts the environment first.

“Additionally, it is a truly worldwide movement that unites feminists, leftists, and environmentalists. I believe the shift is currently underway as people begin to reexamine the economy, specifically the capitalist system “She spoke.

She also urged international leaders to put the preservation of nature ahead of business because “the economy is not possible in the future” without it.

The problematic organizational structure of WEF

Another protester from the Strike-WEF Collective, Claudo Bernard, stated that they demand the WEF be abolished because of its problematic structure, “with the individuals of power and money that come here and the rest of the public is outside.”

This is what Bernard says: “Deals and dictators who can be welcomed here with red carpets are just two examples of the many undemocratic things that are going on.

“There ought to be global forums. However, they ought to have entirely different organizational structures, not just be wealthy corporations.”

Governments, he continued, must assure climate justice and accept what the planet can provide rather than trying to extract too much from it.

A 72-year-old climate activist named Rosemarie Wydler-Walti claimed to be a part of a group of 2,000 women trying to safeguard the environment in Switzerland, which she claimed is “the country most hit by climate change by heat waves.””

She claimed that they filed a lawsuit against the Swiss government because they believed it was not doing enough to combat climate change.

“We hope that the actions to be taken against climate change will be considered within the context of human rights,” the statement reads. “This case will be heard on March 29 in Strasbourg, where the European Court of Human Rights is headquartered.

“Nothing is done by the Swiss government to combat climate change. hardly much at all. In this way, our situation is worse than that of (other) European nations, “She spoke.
