In spite of SCS territorial conflicts, PH is devoted to peace: PBBM
President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. stated on Thursday that the Philippines continues to demonstrate its commitment to peace despite the ongoing territorial disputes in the South China Sea (SCS) (Manila time).
Marcos released the remark despite acknowledging that the SCS controversy was on his mind.
In a one-on-one conversation with World Economic Forum (WEF) president Brge Brende in Davos, Switzerland, he said, “It (the SCS issue) keeps you up at night, it keeps you up during the day, it keeps you up most of the time.”
“It moves quickly. It is continually changing. In order to reply appropriately, you must thus pay attention to it and make sure that you are at least aware of the current scenario “Marcos threw in.
Marcos stated that he brought up the Philippines’ protracted conflict with China in the SCS during his meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in China earlier this month because he thought it was an “essential” topic that could not be overlooked.
If he doesn’t discuss the matter with Xi, he would appear to be failing in his duties, according to him.
“There is no getting around it. We diplomatically referred to it as a facet of our relationship. But we must talk about it since it is a significant and necessary subject. We cannot ignore it and act as though it doesn’t exist because it has an impact on our residents’ quality of life in addition to diplomatic and security implications “added Marcos.
However, Marcos remained adamant that engaging in peaceful dialogue is the only way to resolve the maritime dispute.
He noted that Manila was only acting as a “bystander” whenever there were problems between China and the United States vessels passing through the busy waterway and said that the Philippines could not afford to wage war with Beijing.
This is because, according to him, trade tensions between the US and China are “at the very forefront” in the Philippines.
“We are spectators, just looking on. We will suffer if something goes wrong in this situation. So when someone asks, “What is your foreign policy? What would you say about it? I assert that it is a commitment to peace that is closely monitored by our national interest “added Marcos.
“Even within the Philippines, some claim that more needs to be done. What do you want to do, I asked? to go to war? Everyone is opposed to war. Not in China. Not in the United States. Even the slightest escalation in hostilities in the area already affects trade and all of our interactions with China, the United States, and other members of ASEAN (the Association of Southeast Asian Nations) “Added he.
The Philippines would not abandon its territorial claims in the SCS, Marcos stated in an interview with Bloomberg on Tuesday outside of WEF.
Beijing has overlapping claims to around 80% of the busy waterway in the SCS with the Philippines, China, and numerous other coastal states.
On July 12, 2016, the Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA) in The Hague granted the Philippines’ case after the arbitral tribunal rejected China’s assertion of purported historic rights over nearly the entire SCS.
However, China has disregarded the PCA decision.
