Mayor of Carmen, Cebu Carlo Villamor asked Cebuanos on Monday not to contrast the Sinulog in his town with the one that is observed in opulence every year in Cebu City.

“We celebrate St. Nicholas with so many celebrations. Let’s not compare Sinulog in Carmen to the Sinulog Grand Festival in Cebu City, Villamor said.

He cited the early origins of the devotional dancing rite performed by followers at the capital city’s Basilica Minore del Sto Nino.

Every second Sunday in January, the capital city celebrates Sinulog, whereas Carmen Town, which began the tradition in 1974, celebrates it every third Sunday.

As a result, the people of Carmen formed the Ati-Atihan to honor the Sto. Nino for its miracle in sparing the town from a “scary tremor” sometime in 1973 caused by volcanic activity in Barangay Fuente, together with their parish priest, Fr. Jose Motus, who was a native of Aklan.

Villamor also expressed his gratitude to the mayors of the many Cebu municipalities and cities who attended the Carmen celebration of the Sinulog.

“People come from all over to celebrate Carmen, which explains why it’s so well-liked. In her speech on Sunday, Governor Gwendolyn Garcia stated that everything was Sr. Sto. Nino’s will.

After a downpour at lunchtime, dancers, including Garcia, fell as a result of the large stage at the Olympic-sized town oval becoming wet.

Garcia stated that this was her 14th year performing a dance ritual, but she chose Carmen this time around because of some reservations she had about Sinulog’s new location in Cebu City at the South Road Properties.

Along with the dancers from the Tribu Malipayon contingent from the municipality of Cordova, known in their town festival as the Sarok group, she performed a traditional dance rite while holding an image of the Sto. Nino.

In spite of the controversy stealing the show, Villamor thanked Garcia and the mayors for supporting the Sinulog in his town.

Sinulog awardees

Taking home a total of PHP2 million in cash awards, Villamor praised the group from the southern town of Carcar City for winning the top prize in the ceremonial showdown as well as the finest costume for the category based on Sinulog.

The group from Toledo City won four additional honors, including best in musicality, best in costume, the second runner-up in street dance, and second runner-up for Festival Queen, making them the overall winner for the free-interpretation category.

The Tribu San Roque contingent received the best costume and best in street dancing awards under the same category and was declared the overall winner for the local division.

Along with other accolades like second place in the ritual showdown category based on Sinulog, best in musicality, best in festival costume, and the title of Sinulog sa Carmen Festival Queen 2023, the Talisay City contingent took home a total of PHP1 million in cash prizes for winning the best street dancing.

Vice Mayor Raymond Alvin Garcia, who represented the Cebu city government, saw the event in Carmen.
