The creation of the Western Visayas Dive Circuit is one of the Department of Tourism’s (DOT) top priorities for this year, therefore the department is currently mapping and cataloging the diving locations in Region 6.

There are already recognized dive spots in the area, according to Crisanta Marlene Rodriguez, regional director for DOT Western Visayas.

She brought up Boracay Island, which had diving spots before it was closed in 2018 for renovation.

Guimaras and Antique provinces also have dive sites because they both have marine protected areas (MPAs).

“Given that Cebu is ranked first, it’s quite significant for Region 6. We’ve also heard from tourism expos abroad that divers are actually inquiring about other locations in the nation where they can go diving, she said.

She argued that the area’s close proximity to Regions 7 (Central Visayas) and 8 (Eastern Visayas) is advantageous because their overspill may reach Western Visayas.

On January 30, the DOT-hired Antipara Exploration Inc. will already begin working on the projects that include dive site profiling, underwater mapping, assessment, and literature study of coastal and marine environments.

Dive sites in Negros Occidental, Guimaras, Iloilo, Aklan, and Antique will all be included in the catalog.

If the dive location in the town of Anini-y, Antique, can still be promoted as a destination, it will also be reviewed.

The list of locations that can be promoted for diving has previously been provided to DOT by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources.

We anticipate finishing them by March, at which point we’ll be prepared to market them.

The development of the dive circuit will be given top priority by the DOT, along with the creation of the sugar heritage trail, the sun farms program, the slow food travel project, the biking tours in Boracay, the wellness station in Boracay, the food crawl in Boracay, and the inter-regional products for the Visayas.

According to Rodriguez, the seven-point program of DOT Secretary Maria Esperanza Christina Garcia Frasco is in line with their interests.
